Frequently asked questions

The practical details: how sessions work, fees and insurance, and what to expect. Can’t find your answer? Send a message.

Are sessions virtual or in person?

Sessions are held virtually by secure video across Ontario through Jane App, with limited in-person availability at The Beverley Collective in Toronto. You’ll need a private space and a device with a camera. Review the service fit to make sure virtual care suits you.

Who do you work with?

I work with individuals aged 16 and older who live in Ontario and are motivated to engage in therapy largely independently. My focus is anxiety, OCD, panic, health anxiety, perfectionism and self-criticism. To avoid conflicts of interest, services aren’t offered to residents of Peel Region.

How much are sessions, and do you take insurance?

Sessions are $185 per 50 minutes, paid securely through Jane App. A receipt is issued automatically, and most plans that cover a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) will reimburse you. See Fees & insurance below for details.

What happens at the first session?

The first appointment is an initial assessment. Before it, you’ll complete consent and intake forms through Jane and sign the Service Agreement. Together we review your concerns, goals and relevant history to determine the best way forward.

How do I get started?

Start by reviewing the service fit criteria — it’s the best first step. If it lines up, booking your assessment is one click away.

What types of therapy do you offer?

I work within the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) family, drawing on CBT, ACT, ERP, the Unified Protocol, CFT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing and Prolonged Exposure, tailored to you.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Your sessions are confidential within the legal limits explained in the Service Agreement and reviewed together at the start. Please avoid sharing personal health information by email or web form, which aren’t secure or confidential channels.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. As a Registered Social Worker and psychotherapist I don’t prescribe medication — that’s the role of a physician or psychiatrist. Therapy can be used on its own or alongside medication prescribed by your doctor.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations need at least 48 hours’ notice. Apart from compassionate exceptions, the full fee applies to late cancellations and no-shows.

What if I’m in crisis or need emergency support?

This isn’t a crisis service. If you’re in crisis, call 988 (Canadian Suicide Crisis Helpline). In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.

Who does what

Types of mental health professionals in Ontario

"Therapist," "counsellor," "psychotherapist" — the titles can be confusing. Here’s a plain-language guide to who’s who, what they’re trained to do, and whether they can diagnose or prescribe.

Family Doctor (MD)

Diagnoses mental health concerns and can prescribe medication; some offer counselling. Usually the first point of contact and can refer you to specialists. Covered by OHIP.

Psychiatrist (MD)

A medical doctor with additional residency training in psychiatry. Diagnoses mental health disorders and prescribes medication; some also provide therapy. A referral from your family doctor is usually required. Covered by OHIP.

Psychologist (C.Psych)

Regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Requires a doctoral degree (Ph.D./Psy.D.) — or a master’s degree as a Psychological Associate. Can assess, diagnose, and provide therapy, but cannot prescribe medication. Generally not covered by OHIP; paid out-of-pocket or through extended health benefits.

Registered Social Worker (RSW) / Psychotherapist

Regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). Requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW). Authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy and provides counselling using a range of evidence-based approaches. Cannot prescribe medication. Not covered by OHIP; often covered by extended health benefits. This is Nadeem’s designation — see his credentials.

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)

Regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Requires a master’s-level degree in counselling, psychotherapy, or a related field. Authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. Cannot prescribe medication or diagnose. Not covered by OHIP; often covered by extended health benefits.

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Regulated by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Requires a master’s degree in nursing with additional clinical hours. Can diagnose and prescribe medication within their scope of practice. Covered by OHIP.

Occupational Therapist (OT)

Regulated by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. Requires a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy. Supports functional and daily-living goals related to mental health; does not diagnose or prescribe. Generally not covered by OHIP.
